Not only is Medical Mutual the oldest health insurance company in Ohio, but it’s also the largest health insurer in Buckeye State. It began in 1934 and currently serves 1.5 million members through a network of over 43,000 providers. Medical Mutual strives to “improve the lives of Ohioans via high-quality healthcare coverage.” At Compassion Behavioral Health, we are pleased to accept Medical Mutual.
Medical Mutual Plans and Coverage Options
As a result of the Affordable Care Act of 2010, you’ll receive at least some coverage for substance abuse and mental health services, no matter what type of Medical Mutual plan you have. The insurer offers individual plans, including HMOs, PPOs, and high-deductible plans. In addition, they provide six Medicare Supplement plans, group plans for employers, and short-term health insurance with a duration of 364 days.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
In-network providers have a contract with Medical Mutual. This means that while you may still pay for copays and deductibles, the rest of your services are covered based on a pre-negotiated rate. You’ll enjoy a hassle-free experience and pay less out-of-pocket. Out-of-network providers don’t have contracts or pre-negotiated rates with Medical Mutual. While you may choose one if you prefer, you’ll have to pay higher out-pocket costs.
How Do HMOs Compare to PPOs?
A health maintenance organization or HMO usually comes with lower out-of-pocket costs because it requires you to opt for in-network providers. If you decide to use an out-of-network provider with an HMO, your plan won’t cover the services. Also, an HMO requires a referral from your primary care doctor any time you want to see a specialist.
PPOs are more flexible than HMOs but are also more expensive. With a PPO, you can see out-of-network providers and receive care from specialists without referrals. In general, if you seek care from an in-network provider, you’ll enjoy lower-out-of-pocket costs and more comprehensive coverage.
On the flip side, care from out-of-network providers will come with higher costs. Since Medical Mutual offers both HMO and PPO plans, you can choose the best option for your unique needs and preferences.
