Mental Health Group Therapy in Hollywood, FL

Unlike individual therapy, which involves a therapist and individual in a one-on-one setting, group therapy is a type of psychotherapy in which one or more therapists work with a group of people at once. The group meets on a regular basis so that members can discuss their problems and feelings while supporting one another. Groups sizes range between five and 20 participants that have something in common, such as a specific condition or shared life event.

How Group Therapy Works

A group will usually meet in a room with chairs arranged in a circle so that group members can see one another.  Initially, group members may introduce themselves and reveal their reason for participating. Over time, they may share their real-life experiences and progress.

Sometimes, therapists are very active in the group and have a specific plan or theme for each session. Other times, they encourage a free-form dialogue and only intervene occasionally. While group therapy sessions are typically focused on talking, they might also involve music, exercise, and art projects. Group members are expected to attend and share on a regular basis. All discussions that occur in group therapy sessions are confidential.
