At Compassion Behavioral Health, we implement a cognitive-behavioral approach to relapse prevention treatment. Equipping each client with individualized and comprehensive plans that help identify high-risk situations and emotional triggers, adopt positive coping mechanisms, and develop tools for early relapse prevention.
What Are the Advantages of Relapse Prevention Treatment?
The primary goal of relapse prevention treatment is empowering the person in recovery to resist and overcome triggers that might otherwise influence them to resume substance-abusive behaviors. Some of the ways we accomplish this include:
Identifying specific high-risk situations
Working with a therapist, the client works to identify high-risk situations that have triggered past addictive behaviors. Knowing what these triggers are and how they influence the desire to use drugs or alcohol can help a person know when to avoid them as well as reduce or eliminate their perceived power over one’s life.
Learning skills for coping
After treatment, triggers do not disappear for everyone. Some still struggle with the temptation to resume using drugs or drinking alcohol on occasion.
In these stressful moments, applying learned coping skills can help the person in recovery withstand urges and cravings with greater confidence. Instead of engaging in maladaptive behaviors, you can learn to replace these old habits with ones that empower you to cope without the use of substances.
Increasing Confidence in Recovery
It is completely normal to feel anxiety about recovery. Many who are considering entering treatment might ask questions like:
- Will the stresses of life be more difficult to manage without drugs or alcohol?
- Can relationships damaged by addiction be repaired?
- Will I have to remove people that I care about from my life to protect my recovery?
- How will people behave around me after I’ve completed my treatment?
During relapse prevention treatment, these questions and the narratives behind them are addressed, challenged, and replaced with ones that inspire confidence in pursuing addiction treatment. Deciding to get professional help for substance abuse is a brave and commendable action, and by no means cowardly.
Eliminating Misconceptions on the Effects of Alcohol and Drugs
Believing misconceptions about alcohol or drug use can directly lead to relapse. Ideas like “I can control my drinking now that I’ve completed treatment” or “I can stop taking my medication once I start to feel better” are dangerous and can undo the hard work that a person has invested in their recovery.
Beyond equipping a client with coping skills and a greater sense of confidence, a relapse prevention program will also provide factual knowledge that you can apply to help remain informed of the potential dangers that these misconceptions can pose.
Changing Perceptions of the Relapse Process
Relapsing does not mean that you have “failed”. Recovering from addiction is often not a linear process and many who struggle with this condition may require multiple periods of treatment in their lives until they achieve long-term sobriety.
Working with a prevention treatment specialist, a client can learn what actions to take if they do relapse. There is absolutely no shame in picking up the phone and inquiring about additional treatment if the process needs to be resumed. A compassionate treatment center does not set a limit on how many times you can seek their services.
Medication Education
When entering addiction treatment, a doctor might prescribe medication to help manage withdrawal symptoms. After completing a program, the client may be advised to continue using medications to prevent relapse or to aid in a more gradual recovery process.
If medications are part of your treatment plan, your doctor will advise you on how to manage them. Improper or irresponsible use of the prescribed medication could contribute to relapsing. When used safely, they can be instrumental in helping maintain a successful recovery.
Learning More About Available Programs
Addiction treatment encompasses a variety of services designed to benefit a client both during the program and after. A therapist will counsel you on other programs like mental health dual-diagnosis treatment as well as answer any questions you might have about them.

Compassion met me in a time of crisis with my medication. Their staff swiftly acted and got me into a more stabilized position. The staff are one of the best parts of the program. Not only are they good at their jobs, but they truly care for the individual. I can’t even begin to explain how grateful I am for this place. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health or addiction look no further than CBH.

This was my first time at a rehabilitation center, and last lol, The facilitators and staff were understanding and easy to work with! Will really stood out to me was the in person therapist! While, this was my first time having a face-to-face therapist, I liked how she really took the time to get to understand and know me and was really empathetic to my needs!

My best experience for SA treatment, by far. Rehab is not a comfortable situation in which to be in the first place, but the staff at compassion treated me with dignity and a caring disposition every day. For PHP there are rules and structure as is expected from a treatment program, but they were not intrusive and there was plenty of activities to cope with the constraints and make it much more bearable. I'm grateful for having been able to attend and complete the program.

I’ve been to treatment several times over the years for substance abuse and mental health. And CBH has by far done more for me than any previous treatment center. At the time I discharged I actually felt confident that I would do well. My therapist Vaneeta was excellent! And the group facilitators were top notch as well. I was set for success with great aftercare planning. I would highly recommend this program for anyone that is struggling with mental health or addiction!
