Mental Health Cognitive Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in Hollywood, FL
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a variation of evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). It focuses on teaching people to be mindful and live in the given moment. The primary goal of DBT is to develop healthy ways to deal with stress, regulate emotions, and reduce conflict. Compared to CBT, DBT places more emphasis on managing emotions and building healthy relationships.
How DBT Works
DBT is often used in a variety of settings such as individual therapy, group therapy, and phone coaching. It revolves around four key areas, which include mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation.
During sessions, therapists will offer validation to increase the chance of cooperation and positive change. They may validate that your actions make sense without agreeing that they’re the best way to resolve an issue. Instead, a therapist will work with you to develop new strategies to adopt healthier skills based on the four main pillars of DBT:
Mindfulness
Mindfulness refers to one’s ability to be present in the moment. This means not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. It’s also important to be able to accept difficult situations, rather than avoid them or fixate on what “should have” been done in the past.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
DBT encourages individuals to develop relationships with others based on mutual respect and compassion. This involves effective communication by paying attention to tone of voice and body language along with what is actually being said.
Distress Tolerance
Distress tolerance is defined as the ability to tolerate feelings of stress, anxiety, anger, or pain in the moment. DBT involves developing effective ways of dealing with difficult or troubling situations that may arise. This can include anything from distracting yourself during a panic attack until it passes, taking deep breaths when angry, or finding a healthy physical release for pent-up nervous energy.
Emotional Regulation
Emotional self-regulation is the process of controlling your emotions in a healthy manner. DBT encourages patients to examine their feelings and develop constructive methods for dealing with them. The aim is to gain an understanding of what these sentiments are and why they occur, rather than attempting to eliminate or hide them.

Rehab is not a comfortable situation in which to be in the first place, but the staff at compassion treated me with dignity and a caring disposition every day. For PHP there are rules and structure as is expected from a treatment program, but they were not intrusive and there was plenty of activities to cope with the constraints and make it much more bearable. I'm grateful for having been able to attend and complete the program. read lessMauricio P. 11/19/2023

The staff at clinical always made themselves available to help with any issues or questions I had during my treatment. My therapist was incredible and really helped me with everything I brought to her office. The facilitators consistently had educational and informative groups and would be available after groups to talk one on one if needed. The BHT at the residence really showed care for us and made you feel like part of a community that cares about your wellbeing and recovery giving encouragement and care every single day. During my stay I truly felt cared for and part of a community that I will forever hold close to my heart. I wouldn’t trade the experience I had at CBH for anything in the world. Felt there was a good atmosphere to maintain my sobriety. My case manager Sean and Dara did a amazing job handling my everyday happenings and anything I needed help with and sought out to get it done in a timely fashion. My therapist Jenn was great too with helping me get down to my issues with copping and gave me tools to use in the present and future to combat against stress and anxiety. My group therapists were great as well, helping me to open up about things I wouldn’t normally talk about or share with others and sometimes my family. Also I learned a lot about my self and my addiction, and ways to live a good life without my drug of choice (DOC). I was able to share about my life’s uncomfortable situations stories etc, in a safe space, which in return was able to get honest feed back and conversation around any given subject matter . The staff here has been nothing but helpful in my recovery and if it wasn’t for this place who knows what kind of hell I would be living in right now. Highly recommended place for those who seeking recovery. read lessTara H. 5/17/2023
