Schizophrenia Treatment Center

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder. It causes disordered thinking and behavior that can impair day-to-day functioning. An individual with schizophrenia struggles to think clearly, manage their emotions, and act normally in social situations.

Contrary to popular belief, schizophrenia is not multiple personalities or split personalities. In fact, most individuals with schizophrenia are not violent and do not endanger others. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, schizophrenia only affects about 0.25% to 0.64% of the U.S. population.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia impacts individuals in different ways. It can arise in men or women of all ages. In most cases, men develop symptoms in their late teens and early 20s. Women, however, usually show signs in their late 20s and early 30s. This condition is rare in children. The most common symptoms of this schizophrenia include:

  • Confused speech
  • Strange behavior
  • Poor hygiene
  • Lack of facial expression
  • Lack of emotional expression
  • Lack of motivation
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritational, paranoid, and unusual thoughts
  • Mood swings
  • Hallucinations and delusions
  • Social isolation

Treatments for Schizophrenia

There is no cure for schizophrenia. However, treatment can help manage symptoms. At Compassion Behavioral Health, we offer a variety of treatments for patients with schizophrenia such as:

Drug or alcohol abuse is often a complication of schizophrenia. Therefore, we design treatments for those who are facing both conditions. Between our Substance Abuse Treatment Program and a Mental Health Treatment Program, we can effectively treat both disorders simultaneously.

Causes and Risk Factors of Schizophrenia

There is no single cause for schizophrenia. It’s not the result of a poor upbringing or lack of willpower. Also, while stress may worsen symptoms, it does not lead to schizophrenia. It’s a brain disorder that may occur because of chemical imbalances, birth defects, and genetics.
