Humana Insurance for Substance Abuse Treatment and Mental Health Rehabilitation

Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Humana is one of the largest healthcare companies in the nation, serving over 13 million customers. Its network includes more than 350,000 providers and over 3,000 hospitals.

Just like most insurance plans, Humana plans cover at least some type of substance abuse treatment and mental health treatment, as a result of the Affordable Care Act of 2010. At Compassion Behavioral Health, we’re pleased to accept Humana insurance plans for substance abuse and mental health services.

Humana Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment Coverage

Your individual plan will determine whether Humana will cover some or all of an inpatient treatment program. In general, however, you’ll need to work with an in-network provider to receive the most coverage.

Outpatient services are usually less expensive and may not affect your deductibles as much. Fortunately, most Humana plans come with prescription drug coverage that will help pay for at least some of your medications.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Coverage

In most cases, Humana plans generally will not cover out-of-network treatment facilities, meaning you’ll be responsible for the costs out-of-pocket. If an out-of-network facility is covered, you can expect to pay much higher deductibles and copays. You’ll also need a referral from a doctor. Note that Humana insurance plans do not cover over-the-counter medication, new age therapies, luxury and private facilities, and executive treatment.

Humana Plan Options

Humana offers both HMO and PPO plans. If you have an HMO, your health care will only be covered by in-network providers. While you’ll have fewer choices, you’ll usually pay less out-of-pocket.

With a PPO, you’ll have more choices and be able to select from both in-network and out-of-network treatment centers. Just keep in mind your costs will likely be higher if you opt for an out-of-network facility.

Also, if your plan doesn’t include the substance abuse coverage you’d like, you may invest in a separate substance abuse coverage plan. In addition to PPOs and HMOs, Humana provides Medicare advantage plans and military plans to military personnel and their families.
